MemberHub in 6 Minutes

Posted by Matt Harrell on April 7th, 2009

While our website does a reasonable job of explaining MemberHub’s features and benefits, a quick video walkthrough of any software application can always help. The video below will give you a 50,000 foot view of the purpose of MemberHub and excellent walk-through of the application.

I encourage you to watch this short, 6 minute video and tell us what you think!

how does this compare to "planningcenteronline" in content, ability, and $99 unlimited/month pricing? it appears to do much much more, but for several thousand people?
btw, I get a lot of info just from MilleeMassey tweets
    thanks

Hey Doug. Thanks for dropping by. PlanningCenterOnline is more for church staff to help plan a service and details that go into that. MemberHub is more about connecting members of a church. It gives all the ministries, small groups and teams a private online communities to take enhance communication. As our website states: "As a individual you can connect with all the groups that you’re affiliated with through online "hubs" and as an organization you can use MemberHub to connect with your members and manage the various groups that they are affiliated with." I hope this helps.

Well you asked so I watched.
Very clear, I can clearly see the value from the perspective of an administrator of a community who may not be dealing with a section of the "y Gen". Vocals are pretty nice and clear. Friendly and a good reflection of the audience.

I liked this overview. It was tight, didn't waste my time, and demonstrated the capabilities (and ways they would be used) quite well.

This feels like a very "closed" system. You can't explore other communities and request to join them, etc. You can't "show off to the world" on MemberHub (and our culture does seem to have a passion to become a "celebrity"). It decidedly is NOT a social networking tool.

That is perhaps its genius for existing communities. It is a closed "safe" place, where an existing network can socialize and connect. Where it is "us" on here. I think that can foster the openness required for a community to be alive.

I think the key is getting existing communities to adopt MemberHub as an avenue of asynchronous community. For me, it has only been an email list, and that only for more "official business" and not for interaction and dialogue. I joined FaceBook recently because so many folks at our church are there, and at least there I could connect and keep in touch.

    This makes me wonder:

    1. Available subgroups–are these visible to general members? I'm guessing that is a setting. These could open areas for discussion and dialogue for those who want that without smothering everyone in email storms. I'm guessing that is there?

    2. How well can this be integrated into church/organizational websites (Joomla, etc.)? I'll try putting it in a wrapper and seeing how well it plays there. But it would be nice to have a tighter "extension" integration. And, there's a pretty big marketplace of Joomla based Churches trying to use the paltry-by-comparison "Community Builder" extension.

    3. By the way, I can't send this comment, because aI used the wrong Name? How annoying! (OK, whatever is my "MemberHub" name…)

Hey Art. Thanks so much for the kind words and for taking time to put this reply to together. I\\'ll try to address as much as possible. You\\'re right on about MemberHub being a closed system. Organizations can use social networking for marketing and other things, but their members need a private, safe place to build community and take care of the business of being a member of groups.

      1. The beauty in MemberHub is just creating another hub! So just create a hub and give people the key if they want to join and converse until their heart\\'s content :). As far as listing available sub-groups this is currently not something we have \\"out-of-the-box\\". We need some sort of profile page for MemberHub organizations where the members can browse those groups. Of course they can use hub key\\'s and distribute those in printed fashion, but not quite as easy as allowing a member to login and browse available hubs.

      2. Integrating MemberHub into a church/organization website is key. We have indeed had other orgs that are trying Joomla\\'s Community Builder plugin and either find cumbersome or their members don\\'t like it…so it\\'s a waste. Even if it requires a few extra steps to get into MemberHub, people enjoying being there and that\\'s what really matters!

      3. The IntenseDeabate comment plugin that I\\'m using on the blog is new. Just hooked it up.

      4. As far as the \\"wrapper\\" issue. We have other orgs that are doing this. Basically they just link to Reply

(apparently the "Name" issue was that I checked the "IntenseDebate" box. No idea what I'd done, but it sure was unexpected. Too much mashed-up!)

Yeah, tried the wrapper. Looks like it would fit and work,With at least minor changes:

    1. you would need to have a version that removed everything but the log in, when you weren't logged in–all the MemberHub splash/sales stuff is a no-go. Looks wrong.

    2. It would be great if the Joomla login worked for MemberHub–Some extensions use a "synchronize Users" manual script to do this. Can't be much to do for you folks!

    3. Along with removing the non-logged-in advertisement look, it would be great to have a few basic skins to adapt to a sites look.

I think that would be a quick, temporary way to let Joomla-site churches and organizations utilize MemberHub (until you make that Joomla-Extension version, so that it could be added to the Joomla Extension site for everyone to find and use.)
